DARE 2 SING is a joint partnership initiative between
The Queensmen of Toronto Male Chorus and DAREarts,
delivering a weekly music program for approximately 65 Grade Seven and Eight students attending Dixon Grove School in northwest Toronto.
Research points to a richer, more successful educational experience for children exposed to music. The purpose of our program is to empower participating children by exposing them first hand to the beauty and power of vocal music and the positive activity of singing together.
Goals:
1) Use the model of the children’s singing program developed by DAREarts that includes learning to sing songs from various genres as well as creating their own songs or even an opera, culminating in a final presentation to give the children a sense of accomplishment.
2) Bring together students from this high priority neighbourhood and master musicians.
3) Create a ‘glee club’ environment for the children to actively experience the creative power of singing that will nurture their own creative energies, self-awareness and empowerment.
4) Provide a critical “good news” success story involving a targeted group that is all too often associated with challenged life styles.
Seed capital for this project has been provided by the RTO/ERO (Retired Teachers of Ontario) through their Service to Others grant.
