Human Spirit Values

Webequie 'First Roots' Program

In 2007, the Northern Ontario First Nations fly-in community of Webequie invited DAREarts into their community to help youth overcome the affects of substance abuse, depression and suicide. A 3-year pilot project incorporated DAREarts’ Human Spirit values with traditional teaching, resulting in youth-led accomplishments, expressed through multi-media arts and performance.

In 2010, a Webequie Elder chose the name Nee-tum-Ochee-bek (First Roots) for the program, which has now expanded.

First Roots Program Expansion

In 2011, an extended program in Webequie culminated in a community arts and fashion show followed by a traditional celebratory feast hosted by the Band Council. The focus on fashion, in addition to music, photography and visual art, evolved from the community’s desire to translate their creative images to fabric and learn how to market their skills.

Support from The Ontario Government, Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, CIBC Children’s Foundation and Noront Resources, enabled this program to grow as well as return to Marten Falls (Ogoki Post) and travel to Indian Brook First Nation, Nova Scotia.

Human Spirit Collection: History

This collection of crystal sculptures, given to DAREarts by artist Mark Raynes Roberts through an anonymous donor, represent universal human values that parallel Aboriginal teachings. These values allow DAREarts to inspire Canadian youth to better understand themselves and the world.
