Youth Action Advisory Council

Crisy, Secretary — Victoria, BC

crisy"There are many people who may not know of the importance of DAREarts — but it was the strength behind my survival," Crisy says. When she was nine years old, during the first year of DAREarts, her life was turned upside down and spiraled out of control. Her home life became a nightmare. She left home at 13, was in foster care by 15, pregnant and living on her own by 16, and by 17, her daughter was in foster care, as her father was an abusive crystal meth addict.

At age 18, Crisy decided things needed to change. With her DAREarts lessons in her back pocket, she gained the courage she needed to take action, responsibility and control over her life. She graduated high school with honours and an award, won the privilege to raise her daughter and has received three promotions in the last two years at her government job. Her 10-year-old daughter attends a private school and is in Leadership for Taekwondo.

Her goal for the YAC is to support DAREarts and provide youth with the strength and tools they need to succeed; whether they follow society's "approved" path or stumble onto a crooked one. Her dream is to inspire youth to fight for their survival and dreams. Crisy enjoys art, dancing, poetry, teaching others and inspiring her child to do her best. She volunteers with DAREarts in Vancouver and has received a DAREarts Leadership Award.
